SmallBizBigWeb.com is owned and operated by Randy Fought, a resident of Madison, Tennessee. Prior to starting SmallBizBigWeb Randy was the founder and owner of BBOnline.com, one of the largest and most successful bed and breakfast directory websites. Starting in 1995, BBOnline grew to over 5,000 B&Bs and Country Inns from all over North America by 2005. In 2006 the website was sold to Internet Brands (click here to read a press release about the sale).
Owning and operating a profitable small business that just happened to be a website gives us a unique set of skills and insight about small businesses and the internet. Background:
I have been exposed to the ownership side of small businesses my entire life. When I was a child growing up in Ohio my father and mother started a printing business (Shreve Printing) in the basement of our house. Many a night I was lulled to sleep by the rhythmic sounds of the printing press located below my bedroom. I guess entrepreneurship is in my blood - in addition to my mom and dad, my sister ran the printing business for several years, my grandfather/uncle/cousins have operated a sign company (Fought Signs) for over 50 years and before I was born my great-grandfather operated a bakery called Fought's Bakery.
Growing up I didn't get too much ink under my fingernails. Instead I became addicted to the game of golf. During high school I had the fortune to work part-time at a public golf course (Mohican Hills Golf Course) that was built, owned and still owned by the same man and his family. The golf course staff has always been known as being very friendly and customer oriented. During my college days I moved to the Nashville area where I worked at Old Hickory Country Club for golf professionals Harold Eller and Mike Eller.Education:
After a four year stint at Old Hickory Country Club I went back to college full-time at Lipscomb University. My initial goal was to complete my degree in Business Management. At the suggestion of a businessman/friend I elected to minor in Computer Science. After taking a few computer courses I decided to also major in Computer Science. In 1984 I graduated Cum Laude with the double major and went to work at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a computer programmer/systems analyst.
Even though the world wide web didn't really exist when I was in college the background that I received in computer science was very useful with BBOnline and continues to be as we learn new methods for creating effective websites. Of course, the business management degree also gives me a sound foundation for the "small business" side of things! Conclusion:
This background with various types of small businesses, education and experience with computers and the internet and an entrepreneurial spirit makes me a perfect partner to assist your business grow via the web. To see how we have benefited other small businesses please take a tour of our portfolio.
